The news: Qantas will add capacity to its European routes via Singapore as travellers and airlines seek to avoid stopovers in the Middle East.

The context: In an update shared via its website on Thursday evening, Qantas said as it monitors the evolving situation in the Middle East, it is making adjustments to its international schedule to operate more flights between Australia and Europe.

The updated schedule will come into effect progressively for services from mid-April, running until mid-July.

As part of the changes, flights to Paris will originate in Sydney and operate via Singapore instead of Perth. The return service will continue to operate direct from Paris to Perth until May.

The changes come as airlines reroute flights to avoid stopping over in Middle Eastern aviation hubs as the conflict in the region continues.

Earlier on Thursday The Australian reported that the changes were made possible by redeploying some Qantas 787s from US routes such as Brisbane-Los Angeles and moving some A330s onto international services.

Meanwhile, Qantas-owned Jetstar is planning to reduce its number of flights to New Zealand as the Middle East conflict drives up ticket prices, dampening demand for services.
