It has been a wild and confusing journey to Tuesday night’s federal budget.
Changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing, which Prime Minister Anthony Albanese firmly rejected ahead of last year’s election, are now suddenly at the centre of his budget narrative.
“The dream of home ownership is disappearing for a generation of Australians, and we can’t afford to just sit back and watch that happen,” Albanese told 4CA Cairns on Monday morning.
“Any responsible government has to take the needs of the younger generation and generations to come seriously so that’s why we have concentrated on [housing] supply. So, you’ll see measures in the budget that are aimed at that equity issue for young Australians to give them a fair crack.”
