'A necessity': Latvia's Foreign Minister urges Australia to reopen Kyiv embassy

Baiba Braže also argued that, despite fears, the 'unorthodox' Donald Trump could actually bring 'positive outcomes' for NATO.

Latvia’s top diplomat has urged Australia to reopen its embassy in Kyiv, calling it “a necessity” because Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a global threat.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has also insisted the potential return of “unorthodox” Donald Trump could have “positive outcomes” for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), despite fears the former president could withdraw from the defence pact.

Braže, who previously served as NATO’s assistant secretary general for public diplomacy, is visiting Australia as part of a broader Indo-Pacific tour and met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday.

In an interview with Capital Brief ahead of the meeting, Braže said she would urge Wong to continue Australia’s support for Ukraine, arguing that security is “not regional, it’s global” and that nations committed to the international order have “no alternative” but to back Kyiv.
