The top cybersecurity official in Home Affairs says the DP World hack poses a warning for how much damage a malicious actor could do to the Australian economy.
The regulator of Australia’s critical infrastructure says the cyber attack on port operator DP World has demonstrated how a malicious actor could inflict significant damage to Australia’s economy as an island nation.
The country’s biggest ports operator - which manages container shipments through terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle - has begun restarting its operations after it detected a significant hack on its computer systems on Friday.
It is expected to take weeks before it fully recovers from the attack as it deals with the backlog of shipments.
Hamish Hansford, the deputy secretary of cyber and infrastructure security at the Department of Home Affairs, said the hack was the "most significant cyber incident" in the maritime sector in Australian history.
