The ABC is putting the finishing touches on a major artificial intelligence project, part of a sweeping strategy to integrate the rapidly evolving technology into workflows at the national broadcaster.

The next phase of the ABC’s AI strategy could be revealed to staff as soon as next week, provided work progresses as expected, according to a person briefed on the plans who was granted anonymity to discuss confidential information.

The announcement would come just two months after the ABC’s chief digital and information officer, Damian Cronan, flagged expanded staff access to a new AI tool called ‘ABC Assist’ in a note to staff following a pilot period.

“This tool, which provides access to the entire ABC corpus, is designed to support content teams throughout the production lifecycle,” said Cronan, who was quoted in a note distributed to staff on 27 February seen by Capital Brief.
