AGL pushes ahead with wind and battery buildout
AGL Energy chief financial officer Gary Brown defended the company's renewables and battery plan, insisting that it is still on track.
AGL Energy has reiterated its commitment to switching off coal-fired generation by 2035 and delivering 12 GW of renewable energy and batteries, according to its chief financial officer.
In an interview with Capital Brief ahead of the Citi investor conference on Tuesday, Gary Brown said AGL had made pleasing progress on securing early battery and wind projects that will underpin its plan to replace coal with renewable energy, firmed by batteries and supported by gas peaking plants.
“We've been really clear with the market that our focus is very much on deploying our batteries ... And the building of flexibility into our generation portfolio, which will become very important through the transition,” he said.
He pointed to the Liddell Battery, now under construction, and the Tomago Battery, which reached final investment decision in the past six months — a critical step before construction can begin — as evidence of progress. The company already operates the Torrens Island and Broken Hill batteries.
