AI takes centre stage in Telstra’s next strategic chapter

Telstra is ending its T25 strategy and turning to artificial intelligence, opening a Silicon Valley hub and hiring key talent to accelerate its next phase.

Telstra’s “T25” plan — launched four years ago to boost 5G rollout and cut costs — will formally conclude on 30 June. Its next strategic plan, regardless of what numbers it puts at the end of it, will clearly revolve around two letters: AI.

If the $700 million joint venture with professional services giant Accenture wasn’t a clear enough signal, Telstra has made two further moves this week that leave no doubt about its AI ambitions.

The most recent came on Tuesday US time, when Telstra and Accenture opened a hub in Mountain View, California. The goal, said Telstra Executive of Data & AI Dayle Stevens, is to speed up the integration of new technologies from Silicon Valley into the telco’s operations.

"Whenever anyone goes over, they come back with so many ideas about the different things you could do, but then making them happen here is really hard," Stevens, who is also co-CEO of the joint venture with Accenture, told Capital Brief.
