Albanese, Chalmers ponder tweaks to 'Stage 3' tax cuts

Speculation is mounting that the government is gearing up to amend the upcoming tax cuts amid a growing focus on providing cost-of-living relief.

The tax cuts have been a burning question for Albanese and Chalmers since they came to government. AAP/Mick Tsikas.

The 'Stage 3' tax cuts are the issue that just won't go away for a government caught between intense pressure from voters over cost of living pressures and the risk of political blowback from breaking an election promise.

Despite weeks of Jim Chalmers and Anthony Albanese insisting their position hasn't changed, an imminent overhaul to the cuts is expected by Canberra insiders.

Two senior government sources told Capital Brief that the Prime Minister and Treasurer have been weighing up whether to amend the cuts to fund additional tax relief for those on lower incomes. The sources did not want to be named as the issue is sensitive and ongoing. No decision had yet been made.

While tweaking stage three has been considered, another option could be to provide additional tax relief on top of the already legislated tax cuts.
