Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will tomorrow seize on Treasury advice to argue why he needed to break an election promise by overhauling the stage 3 tax cuts.

Albanese faces an aggressive campaign from the Opposition over the question of trust after promising for 18 months that he would not touch the tax cuts, which in their current form overwhelmingly favour higher income earners and are due to take effect from July.

In an address at the National Press Club in Canberra on Thursday, the Prime Minister will say the inflation and cost-of-living crisis made it necessary to change the already legislated package.

“Some would say that we should stay the course, even if it means going to the wrong destination,” Albanese will say, according to a draft of part of his speech.
