Allegra Spender says tax reform 'a priority' after sluggish MYEFO numbers

The teal independent says indexation and stamp duty will be on the table if the major parties need to negotiate for a majority after the election.

Independent MP Allegra Spender is pushing for tax reform after Jim Chalmers handed down MYEFO. AAP/Mick Tsikas.

Independent Allegra Spender says overhauling Australia’s tax system would be a priority in hung parliament negotiations, suggesting indexing the tax brackets would impose “discipline” on governments.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivered what could be his last Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) on Wednesday, confirming long-running structural deficits and a budget under more pressure than previously expected.

In an interview with Capital Brief, Spender said MYEFO reinforced the need for an overhaul of Australia’s tax system and for more emphasis on productivity and economic growth.

With the looming prospect of a hung parliament, the Wentworth MP said tax reform would be a “priority” in negotiations with the major parties if neither wins a majority in the upcoming election — which is looking increasingly likely, according to polls.
