Amelia Hamer's uphill Kooyong battle will answer a key political question
In a wide-ranging interview with Capital Brief, the star Liberal candidate makes the case for change in the blue ribbon seat and defends the Coalition's climate policy.
In a few months’ time, the race for federal seat of Kooyong should provide an answer to a question bugging analysts in Canberra since 2022. Does the 'teal' movement, which cost the Coalition a string of blue ribbon seats at the last election, have staying power?
The star Liberal candidate for the east Melbourne seat, Amelia Hamer, has been hosting ‘listening posts’ at train stations around the electorate – potentially a year out from polling day. It’s listening that the Coalition’s critics say is needed around these parts.
Hamer’s acutely aware of the trends – once a seat goes independent, it rarely goes back – but is confident of bucking them.
“People can see that we need to change the government, and the way to do that is by putting a Liberal in Kooyong,” Hamer tells Capital Brief over a coffee.
