Another fight over negative gearing is stirring in Canberra
Both the Greens and Coalition are attacking the government over potential changes to negative gearing, even though Labor insists it has no plans to do so.
Greens leader Adam Bandt has spent the past 18 months smashing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese from the left over the stage 3 tax cuts. But now the government has overhauled the policy, the Greens have identified negative gearing as their next line of attack.
The Greens over the weekend announced their support for the government's Help to Buy scheme, which is designed to alleviate housing affordability pressures, would be contingent on changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount for investment properties.
Negative gearing - tax concessions for property investors - is a sore point for Labor with many attributing Bill Shorten's 2019 election loss, in part, due to his planned changes to the policy.
But senior Labor sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter freely, told Capital Brief that they had not ruled out taking changes to negative gearing to the next election.
