Anthony Albanese sharpens stance on Trump as 'Liberation Day' casts shadow over campaign

The prime minister Anthony has been wary of directly criticising the US President on the campaign trail — until now.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's campaign press conference on Tuesday was designed to be centred on Medicare - a key focus for Labor as the election race unfolds. It was instead dominated by US President Donald Trump.

Eight out of 18 questions from the travelling press pack involved the man in the White House, as the Trump administration prepares to impose sweeping tariffs on the rest of the world, including Australia, from Wednesday in an event it has dubbed 'Liberation Day'.

“I’m sensing a theme here,” Albanese quipped at one point following another Trump-related question.

Albanese has been wary of directly criticising the US President on the campaign trail. But on Tuesday, as it became clear key Australian policies are in the firing line of the Trump administration, the Prime Minister’s approach sharpened.
