Anthony Albanese soaks it in after historic Labor landslide
After a whirlwind final day of campaigning that included a visit to the MCG and his home suburb of Marrickville, Anthony Albanese has claimed an emphatic, and historic victory.
The cheering could not have been louder at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club in Sydney's inner west as Anthony Albanese took to the stage to claim a decisive and historic victory – and one that only a few short months ago looked unlikely.
The Prime Minister received a hero’s welcome from the room as he arrived following the networks calling a majority Labor win, making him the first Labor prime minister to be re-elected since Bob Hawke in 1987.
“Serving as your Prime Minister is the greatest honour of my life and it is with a deep sense of humility and a proud sense of responsibility that the first thing I do tonight is to say thank you to the people of Australia,” Albanese said, before acknowledging the traditional owners of the land to wild applause.
Flanked by his fiancée and son Nathan, he cautioned the crowd to treat others with respect as he wished Peter Dutton and his family the best.
