Optus has defended its plans to reduce the footprint of its sprawling suburban Sydney campus and scale back office perks in the face of union anger towards management over the moves and the way it handled a recent triple zero outage.

Communications Workers Union assistant secretary James Perkins told Capital Brief that Australia’s second-largest carrier was trying to “jam” its workers together at a time when morale is at an “all-time low” in morale following last month’s fatality-linked triple zero outage.

“Like a lot of companies, they’ve got to realise that the most important assets are their people but once again we’ve seen them go for the low-hanging fruit,” Perkins said.

Capital Brief this week revealed that Optus has scaled back office perks including table tennis tables and staff buses, and also moved workers out of one of its six campus buildings and consolidated them across the remaining five, in preparation for a potential sublease.
