Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft and the race to US$4 trillion

Apple was the first company to reach a market cap of one, two and then three trillion US dollars. Microsoft or Nvidia could beat it to four.

Microsoft and Nvidia have thus far been the biggest beneficiaries of AI, though Apple may soon join them. EPA/Mast Irham.

Apple and Microsoft are looking as strong as ever, but it’s tough to bet against Nvidia’s incredible momentum.

That’s what fund managers and stock analysts are saying as the three AI-fuelled tech titans race to become the world’s first USD4 trillion ($6 trillion) company.

“I think it will be a two-horse race between Microsoft and Nvidia,” said Swell Asset Management’s chief investor Lachlan Hughes. Brisbane-based Swell holds Microsoft stock but not Nvidia.

“We are always trying to play the long game, which is why we haven’t been as constructive on Nvidia,” he said, adding that the likes of Google, Amazon and Meta are building their own AI processors to ease reliance on Nvidia. “In the short term, the momentum is hard to fight against.”
