Australia can’t afford another term of AI inaction

The government’s failure to act on AI is hurting productivity and living standards — Australia needs a clear, urgent strategy, not more delays and summits.

The treasurer’s claim that he needs a third term of government to address productivity does little to instill confidence that Labor has a plan. Nor does the prime minister’s decision to call a summit in August.

Productivity has declined over the past decade, but the fall in living standards over the past three years is unprecedented. It calls for immediate solutions — not next term, not a summit. Now.

Artificial intelligence presents the single greatest opportunity in a generation to lift productivity. Never before have we had such transformative technology at our fingertips, waiting to be harnessed for national benefit.

Yet the Albanese government has sat on its hands for three years, failing to join the dots between AI and productivity. It’s estimated that automation technologies, including AI, could add $600 billion to our economy each year.
