Australia is not producing enough AI talent

Companies are increasingly looking abroad to fill AI development vacancies, data from HR startup Deel shows.

As demand for AI developers rises, the dearth of Australian talent is leading companies to look elsewhere to fill gaps.

The amount of Australian companies hiring AI contractors has increased 40% year on year, according to data from HR startup Deel. Businesses have filled that gap primarily by hiring from Brazil, India and Argentina.

“The AI talent is exceptional [in] these markets,” Deel’s ANZ lead Shannon Karaka said. “It is more plentiful than in Australia and often comes at a lower hiring cost.”

The data reinforces the contention that Australia is an AI laggard. The country is home to relatively few high-profile AI startups, and there are no companies developing their own foundation models, a task being tackled not just in the US and China but also France, Germany and the UK.
