Australia teams up with Canada in fight against Meta over payment for news
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland will hold critical talks with her Canadian counterpart as governments in both countries look for a unified response to social media behemoth Meta.
Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland will hold critical talks with the Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge later this month to discuss a unified approach to social media behemoth Meta's resistance to paying news publishers in both countries.
The ministerial meeting, which will take place online, comes after Meta earlier this month said it would not renew lucrative funding deals worth $70 million a year to Australian news publishers and amid a seven month standoff in Canada between the country's government and the Facebook and Instagram owner.
“Australian and Canadian public service representatives have met on a number of occasions to discuss respective regulatory frameworks, approaches and emerging issues,” a spokesperson for Rowland told Capital Brief.
“The Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, is scheduled to meet the Minister for Canadian Heritage, the Hon Pascale St-Onge, later this month to continue these important discussions.”
