Australia will send 49 of its retired battle tanks to Ukraine to aid in its fight against Russian forces after working for months with the Biden administration on the plan.

Defence Minister Richard Marles will announce the plan on Thursday, according to multiple Australian military sources who were not authorised to comment publicly.

After this article was published, Marles and Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy confirmed the move to send the M1A1 Abrams tanks, which are valued at a total of $245 million.

Marles said Australia's support for Ukraine "has not wavered since Russia’s illegal invasion, and Australia will continue standing with Ukraine".
