Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has confirmed plans to ease restrictions on highly paid, skilled migrants as part of broader reforms aiming to speed up visa processing times, in a win for many businesses.

In an interview with Capital Brief Giles confirmed the government would soon introduce a tiered skilled migration system, with fewer regulations applying to higher-wage workers but more scrutiny on industries such as aged care. He said it was needed to adopt a “lighter touch and speedier processing at the top of the labour market”.

The Albanese government will within weeks release its long-awaited strategy to overhaul the migration system, which it has described as “broken”, in a bid to get skilled workers into the right areas quicker and tackle the explosion of temporary migrants by providing more permanent pathways.

Giles said some lower paid jobs, particularly in the care sector, needed to be part of the solution.
