Australian politicians react to Trump's conviction — in entirely predictable ways
From 'witch hunt' to a guilty 'crook': The most strident reactions to Donald Trump's conviction by a US court have come from the usual suspects.
The most strident reactions from Australian parliamentarians to the news that former US president Donald Trump had been found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment to adult-film star have come from the usual places.
Nationals senator Matt Canavan labelled the New York trial an “embarrassing political witch hunt”, while Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said “the crook is guilty”.
The government is attempting to strike a more sober path, declaring the Australia-US relationship will endure and insisting the verdict is an internal matter for the US that would be inappropriate to weigh in on.“You wouldn't expect the Foreign Minister of Australia to engage in commentary about the legal processes of another country … And I won't,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Friday, echoing similar comments from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
"Of course, this is a decision of the US court that we don’t comment [on] where we’re not participants on court processes of other countries, and of course, the presidential election later this year is a matter for the people of the United States," Albanese told ABC radio.
