Australia’s top cyber spy has urged businesses to phase out password-only logins quickly, amid warnings that employees remain the “weakest link” for hackers targeting corporate networks.

Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) director-general Abigail Bradshaw’s warning follows revelations that data from 6 million Qantas customers was leaked on the dark web after hackers targeted Salesforce, a third-party platform used by the airline.

The ASD’s cyber threat report, released on Monday, paints a stark picture of Australia’s cyber landscape, with critical infrastructure now a prime target and the cost of breaches continuing to rise.

The report also notes that geopolitical tensions are playing out in cyberspace, with Chinese hackers targeting the growing number of work-from-home offices to infiltrate corporate networks.
