Betashares' David Bassanese names his three biggest economic worries
Picking up on global trends and thinking ahead is bread and butter for the chief economist at Betashares, a fund manager that specialises in ETFs.
David Bassanese has made a career of keeping a close eye on the changing nature of economies around the world, including in his current role as chief economist for ETF specialist fund manager Betashares.
And right now, the former Australian Financial Review columnist (who has also worked at Treasury, the OECD and Macquarie) has three big concerns for Australia’s, and the world’s, economic future.
The first on his list is, perhaps unsurprisingly, climate change.
“It’s festering. It used to be happening slowly, it’s happening faster now,” Bassanese says. “Only a couple of years ago the evidence of climate change was quite peripheral, now the weather patterns are so erratic it’s hitting us in the face.”
His next two top concerns relate to situations that are also deeply worrying but far less predictable: the futures of the world's economic giants, China and the US.
