'Class warfare': Small business lobby lashes Labor over opposition to tax-free lunches

COSBOA says the Albanese government is pitting the public against each other through its framing of the opposition’s fringe benefits tax policy, and its move to get Treasury to cost the plan.

Luke Achterstraat is clearly bothered by what he has seen play out in Canberra this week.

The CEO of the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) has the Albanese government in his crosshairs over its sharp reaction to the opposition’s plan to allow small business deductions for lunches and entertainment.

Labor has staunchly opposed the proposal, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers among those in government who have dubbed it Peter Dutton’s “free lunch for bosses policy”.

“It’s a dangerous move for the government to oppose reduced tax for small business and paint it as class warfare,” Achterstraat told Capital Brief. He’s especially bothered by this framing of the proposal as a “free lunch”.
