Coalition declines to back Albanese’s high-speed rail plan without detailed costings
While Anthony Albanese can barely contain his enthusiasm for fast rail from Sydney to Newcastle, other political parties are less sure.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has dismissed Anthony Albanese’s enthusiasm for a High Speed Rail line from Sydney to Newcastle, insisting a restoration of Australian living standards is a much greater priority.
Responding to a question from Capital Brief on Wednesday, Taylor was non-committal on the Coalition’s position on HSR, which Albanese says would cut travelling times between the two cities to one hour, with the train travelling at speeds of up to 320km/hr.
Taylor said the Prime Minister talked a lot about the project, but had failed to produce a properly costed proposal.
His comments came after Albanese rejected critics of the cost of the proposed 194km rail line, which will reportedly cost more than $90 billion — a figure he has not confirmed — and be shovel ready in two years.
