Coalition courts crypto industry with promise to make it a priority
Previous efforts to establish crypto laws stalled under the Albanese government. Now, the Coalition is betting that reviving them will be a winning strategy.
As Peter Dutton channels Donald Trump’s enthusiasm for cutting government regulation, the Coalition is promising to make crypto regulation a priority if it wins the upcoming federal election.
Shadow Minister for Financial Services Luke Howarth told Capital Brief that a Coalition government would prioritise crypto regulation to prevent the local industry from falling behind the rest of the world.
“The new government… won’t be sworn in, if the election is in May, until late June, and by that time the US would probably have their regulation in place,” he said.
“We are a little bit behind, but if a Coalition government is given the opportunity to govern and we move quickly we can make sure we have an industry here strengthened by clear guidelines so that they’re not second guessed and having to worry about ASIC.”
