Coinbase has pushed the Albanese government for a national crypto champion similar to David Sacks’ White House “Crypto Czar” role as the industry braces for an update to long-awaited legislation as early as this week.

The crypto exchange's APAC managing director John O'Loghlen raised the suggestion during recent talks with Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino, who will be responsible for spearheading permanent crypto rules.

“We’ve been advocating for the appointment of an independent digital asset champion to work with government and industry to set that agenda,” O’Loghlen said in an interview, “in the same way that the US appointed a crypto czar and they moved from last to first in record time.”

O’Loghlen was referencing venture capitalist and Paypal alum David Sacks, who was given the role of White House Crypto Czar to help fulfil Donald Trump’s pledge to enact crypto legislation within 100 days of taking office.
