DAZN, the UK streamer with its sights set on Foxtel’s sports assets

British sports streamer DAZN has a limited presence in Australia. It sees Foxtel as a chance to secure AFL and NRL rights — and gain 4.6 million subscribers.

In a pre-recorded video earlier this month, United States President-elect Donald Trump appeared on screens in front of a studio audience in Miami to throw his support behind next year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

The event, hosted by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and featuring a performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Emilio Estefan, unveiled the draw for the inaugural competition, set to kick off in the US next June.

For global sports streaming platform DAZN, however, the event marked a celebratory conclusion to a 48-hour victory lap. Just days earlier, DAZN — relatively unknown to most Australians — secured global streaming rights to the tournament in a deal worth USD1 billion.

For DAZN, the Club World Cup is part of an ambitious global push — one that could soon include a major foothold in Australia. Talks with News Corp about a deal involving Foxtel could ultimately offer DAZN the opportunity to secure 4.6 million paying subscribers Down Under, along with high-value AFL and NRL broadcasting rights.
