Marles' VIP flight frenzy and Australia's long history of secrecy over politicians' air travel
New documents reveal Defence Minister Richard Marles requested 155 VIP flights in just over a year - a level only eclipsed by the PM.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles took 155 taxpayer-funded VIP flights in just over a year, but his department is not disclosing where they went and on what dates.
Marles has for months been criticised by the Greens, the Coalition and large sections of the media since it was revealed he requested $3.6 million in VIP flights between April 2022 and June 2023.
Defence has refused to release details about the routes and dates of individual flights, citing a security review by the Australian Federal Police.
Marles was involved in the decision in March to prohibit the release of information detailing where government VIP planes flew and who was on board.
