The national anti-corruption watchdog received 120 referrals related to the Department of Defence in its first 21 months of operation.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) handed down its first finding of corrupt conduct last month, ruling that a Home Affairs official abused her office by corruptly securing her sister’s partner a job while concealing their relationship.

The Albanese government appointed Paul Brereton, a former high-ranking Australian Defence Force (ADF) official, as the NACC’s first commissioner in July 2023.

Questions about a perceived conflict of interest have been raised after revelations, first reported by the ABC, that Brereton has regularly attended military functions in full uniform while NACC commissioner.
