Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany is expected to ride out a Nazi salute photo scandal that has surfaced just as parent company News Corp kicks off a sale process for the pay TV operator.

Senior figures at News Corp, which owns 65% of Foxtel, had until Tuesday privately expressed support for Delany and gently turned away suggestions that the pay-TV chief could be forced out following publication of the image, which was taken roughly 10 years ago and has drawn global news coverage.

The sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to speak freely, said Delany had a strong track record both leading the business and on the issue of antisemitism. Unless the scandal spins further out of control, one of the sources said, Delany is expected to retain his job.

News Corp did not immediately return a request for comment. News Corp chairman Lachlan Murdoch has not made public comments on the matter, nor has his Australian lieutenant and Foxtel chair, Siobhan McKenna.
