The appointment signals that the Opposition leader is seeking a tougher stance as he goes on the attack against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The Liberal Party has hired former minister Jamie Briggs as its chief political adviser for the upcoming election campaign as Opposition leader Peter Dutton prepares to target scores of Labor-held seats.

Two Liberal Party sources confirmed with Capital Brief that Briggs has been hired as ‘chief adviser – politics and campaigns’ months out from an election due by May next year. He will work closely with his long-time confidant Dutton in the role.

Briggs is currently head of corporate affairs for government consulting firm Scyne Advisory, and has been out of politics since losing his seat at the 2016 election to Nick Xenophon Team candidate Rebekha Sharkie, who still holds the seat as an independent.

He then went on to work at PwC Australia, where he was managing partner until November last year, before moving on to Scyne Advisory.
