The federal Opposition is set to wave through Labor’s overhaul of the stage 3 tax cuts after an internal debate over how to avoid what one Liberal MP described as a “political ambush”.

Shadow cabinet will meet on Monday in Canberra where they will discuss how to vote on Labor’s revised tax cuts which will be introduced to parliament next week.

Marginal seat MPs and most members of shadow cabinet favour a position under which they will put up a series of amendments to Labor's plan, but wave the package through in the final vote.

While Albanese has opened himself up to the political attack that he has broken a key election promise by overhauling stage 3, the move to overhaul the policy has wedged Opposition leader Peter Dutton who does not want to be accused of standing in the way of bigger tax cuts for low and middle-income earners.
