Dutton's big nuclear reveal raised more questions than it answered
The Opposition leader has announced where seven nuclear reactors would be located if the Coalition wins government. But the rest of his plan remains threadbare - and it seems intentional.
Peter Dutton’s common refrain during the Voice to Parliament referendum campaign was: “If you don’t know, vote no”. On Wednesday, the Coalition leader announced arguably the biggest proposed change to Australia’s energy system with glaring questions unanswered.
He's not the first politician to contradict himself, but Dutton's announcement today has left observers (and voters) with more questions than answers.
We now know where the Coalition intends to build seven nuclear reactors across five states. We’ve heard the first two will be online by 2037, and the rest some time before 2050.
But how the government will secure those sites, at least some of which are privately owned, while overcoming opposition from state governments and local communities remains unclear.
