Economists urge tax reform and productivity push in Labor's first 100 days
Six top economists are calling on the Albanese government to prioritise tax reform, budget repair and productivity gains in its crucial first months.
In its first 100 days, the re-elected Labor government should focus on boosting productivity and strengthening the budget bottom line.
That is the overwhelming message from six of Australia’s top non-partisan economists, who spoke with Capital Brief about the urgent priorities they want the government to address.
Committee for Economic Development of Australia chief economist Cassandra Winzar, Grattan Institute CEO Aruna Sathanapally, HSBC chief economist Paul Bloxham, EY Oceania chief economist Cherelle Murphy, PwC Australia chief economist Amy Lomas and independent economist Saul Eslake are all calling on the government to tackle the big-ticket issues that have long dogged the Australian economy.
Winzar is urging an immediate government commitment to discuss major economic issues, including tax reform, alongside a detailed review of the budget and spending priorities.
