Dumped cabinet minister Ed Husic is set to be handed the chairmanship of federal parliament’s influential economics committee, in a consolation prize that could give the outspoken former industry minister a prominent platform to shape debate on key economic policies.

Labor's factions have finalised most of the party’s internal allocations for parliamentary committee positions, with the appointments expected in the coming days.

Husic will take over as chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics, replacing Daniel Mulino, who was elevated to Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s post-election reshuffle.

Also receiving committee posts are former assistant ministers Tim Watts and Justine Elliott — both casualties of the reshuffle — who will chair the education and house privileges committees, respectively.
