Electoral reforms still on ice despite Labor's pledge to negotiate
Labor said it would continue talks over the summer after a deal broke down late last year. But the government has yet to revive the negotiations.
Labor has not revived its plan to overhaul Australian elections, despite promising to resume negotiations over the summer break after talks collapsed.
Special Minister of State Don Farrell introduced his electoral reform package to parliament in November, describing it as a “once-in-a-generation reform” designed to curb the influence of big money in politics.
But the Albanese government, which had effectively bypassed the crossbench in negotiations, was left stranded when the opposition refused to back the bill at the eleventh hour.
Labor shelved the plan but promised to continue talks over the summer break, with frontbencher Katy Gallagher insisting at the time that the government’s “intention” was to return with the bill this year.
