The eSafety commissioner, which has repeatedly clashed with the tech billionaire, is investigating fresh complaints over sexualised deepfakes created on AI platform Grok.

The Australian government could be headed for another showdown with Elon Musk, with the online safety regulator confirming it is investigating complaints about sexualised deep fake images generated on the tech billionaire's AI platform Grok, and a senior Albanese government minister criticising the use of generative AI for exploitation.

Grok has caused alarm globally in recent weeks after it was used to generate images of real individuals, including women and children, in their underwear when prompted by other X users.

The European Commission has declared the practice “illegal [and] appalling”, while the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom has also made “urgent contact” with Musk’s company xAI.

A spokesperson for eSafety confirmed to Capital Brief that the agency had received “several reports” of Grok creating sexualised images of individuals without their consent, including some potentially involving child sexual exploitation material (CSAM).
