eSafety monitors 'extremely distressing' Bondi massacre posts but is yet to issue takedowns
The online safety regulator has been flooded with complaints about posts relating to the terror attack but is yet to take action against any social media platform.
The eSafety Commissioner has confirmed it has not yet issued any takedown notices for footage of the Bondi massacre posted to social media, but is engaging with the major platforms as it reviews large volumes of content relating to the incident.
Graphic videos of the terrorist attack, including of victims’ bodies and of the perpetrators opening fire, circulated widely in the wake of the attack, triggering a wave of complaints to the online regulator.
The eSafety Commissioner has not yet taken formal action against platforms, an eSafety spokesperson told Capital Brief, because the posts have yet to meet the high bar set for illegal content set out in Australian laws.
“eSafety has received multiple complaints about online material showing footage of the mass shooting at Bondi, which has been declared by authorities as a terrorist incident,” the spokesperson said.
