Federal Cabinet sits on Tiktok data harvesting review as Albanese visits China
A sensitive review into TikTok and other social media companies is sitting with Cabinet despite being completed in March. And it’s not clear when it will be made public.
A high-level security review examining privacy concerns about Chinese video sharing platform TikTok has been considered by federal cabinet and the government is now weighing up when to announce the response.
As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visits China this week where he met President Xi Jinping on Monday afternoon and is due to meet Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday, his government has for months been sitting on an investigation into data harvesting by social media companies based in authoritarian states such as TikTok and WeChat.
Capital Brief has been trying to access the review by the Department of Home Affairs under Freedom of Information Laws since July.
The review - which also included input from the Australian Signals Directorate and the Australian Cyber Security Centre, which sit within the Department of Defence - was ordered by Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil in September, 2022, and completed around March this year.
