Hacker 'Fortibitch' claims credit for ransom attack on $90b cyber giant
A hacker claims to have stolen 440 gigabytes of data from the $90 billion cybersecurity company.
A hacker claiming responsibility for an attack on Fortinet — the world’s third-largest cybersecurity vendor, which protects critical infrastructure assets in Australia — is attempting to hold the $90 billion company to ransom.
Capital Brief revealed on Thursday that Fortinet, which claims to secure Australia’s “most critical infrastructure”, recently experienced a network breach. The intruder gained access to a cloud-based shared drive containing data of up to 2,000 of Fortinet's customers.
Fortinet is listed on the Nasdaq and valued at approximately USD60 billion ($90 billion). Shares in the company dropped by as much as 4.4% after it confirmed Capital Brief’s reporting in a statement. The stock ended the session 2.8% lower.
On Friday, a hacker using the alias “Fortibitch” claimed on an internet forum that they had stolen 440 gigabytes of data. They have made the data available online, where it’s being accessed by the forum’s users, and claimed to have tried to extort Fortinet into paying a ransom, which the company refused to pay.
