Gaza backlash against Kamala Harris in Michigan sounds alarm for Labor
Arab-American voters in Michigan punished Harris for her support for Israel — regardless of Donald Trump’s own stance. Labor will be watching.
Analysts began offering explanations for Kamala Harris’ defeat even before Donald Trump’s return to the White House was confirmed. No single explanation was a silver bullet, but there was a grain of truth in each.
Trump’s victory was comprehensive — he swept the seven swing states and built a strong coalition among minority voters — making it impossible to attribute solely to one factor. But Harris' defeat in Michigan, where the state's roughly 300,000 Arab-American voters abandoned the Democrats over their support for Israel, won't be ignored in Canberra.
In Australia, the Muslim Votes Matter (MVM) movement is looking to seize on similar anger to send Labor a message. Its national spokesperson, Naser Alziyadat, believes Michigan proves Muslims will no longer accept being taken for granted.
“The implications here are clear: parties need to address and genuinely engage with the concerns of all communities to secure their votes,” Alziyadat told Capital Brief.
