Global order being ‘erased’, Canadian prime minister tells Australians

Mark Carney is the first Canadian leader to visit Australia in more than a decade, as US President Donald Trump upends the global order.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared the old world order is being “erased” and is yet to be replaced, warning “when the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself”.

In his first major speech during a three-day tour of Australia, Carney urged middle powers to bind together to “ensure that integration is never again a source of our subordination” by predatory powers.

His comments come a year after Canada’s biggest trading partner, the US, imposed a series of crippling tariffs on its northern neighbour under returned President Donald Trump.

In a thinly veiled reference to the US and China, Carney warned of “hegemons … acting without restraint” which leaves “the rest of us to bear the consequences”.
