The move to Goldman marks the latest in a wave of high-profile analyst departures shaking up Australia’s investment banking ranks.

Goldman Sachs has poached long-time Citi banking analyst Brendan Sproules, further escalating the talent wars in the analyst ranks.

Goldman lost its previous bank analyst, Andrew Lyons, to Jefferies, which has undertaken a series of raids on its Wall Street rival. Lyons’ departure shook loose highly rated analyst Matt Wilson, who has since joined Jarden.

As Capital Brief reported in October, Lyons was a managing director with more than 10 years at Goldman. Industry sources say his deal at Jefferies is a “2x2” — $2 million guaranteed for two years. Lyons will also forgo his Goldman bonus, typically paid in January.

Jefferies’ raids on Goldman began with the dramatic poaching of Goldman’s head of equities, Mario Argyrides, in April. That move signalled that Wall Street-style rivalry had arrived in the antipodes. Industry sources say Argyrides’ deal was even more lucrative than that of his close colleague Lyons, reportedly a “3x3” — an enormous sum in the local market.
