Good Company Law's Hannah Marshall on the flaws in the media code and setting up a new firm in 2024

The ex-Marque Lawyers partner Hannah Marshall has put her kelp-farming dreams on hold to set up a new firm in a "perfect storm" period for business risk, regulatory upheaval and media-bargaining code panic.

When Hannah Marshall took her first break from practising law in 20 years at the end of 2023 she had big plans, and none of them involved litigation.

Kelp farming and surfing were what Marshall had top of mind, having acted on the board of startup accelerator Ocean Impact Organisation. "I envisioned myself in gum boots and a cute beanie, by the seaside, surfing a lot and producing a product which was going to help save the planet."

But something changed.

Marshall described reacting to legal news, feeling her gut "churn" and that she "missed being part of the action." In some ways, it's a case of once a lawyer always a lawyer, but Marshall says the distance she'd had thanks to her seaweed sojourn "had clarified what I loved most and how I thought I could best be of service. And so I put all of that into this firm."

Last week Marshall announced the creation of that firm, Good Company Law.

Marhsall was a partner at her previous firm, Marque Lawyers, where she worked on a string of high-profile cases and is considered an expert in competition law, defamation and regulatory issues.
