Greens' leader Adam Bandt sets the scene for tense hung parliament fight
In a National Press Club address on Wednesday, Adam Bandt made it clear that the Greens will negotiate hard in the event of a hung parliament.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s attempt to hold the centre ground is being threatened by a revolt on his left. As the prospect of a hung parliament grows, the nationwide protests against the government’s legislation forcing the CFMEU into administration have brought home how difficult post-election negotiations could be.
Surrounded by hi-vis vests and a sign likening Albanese to Hitler, Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather gave full-throated backing to the scandal-plagued construction union which is now at war with Labor.
“The political class hate you,” the first term MP told angry protestors in Brisbane.
A day later, in slightly more refined surroundings — the National Press Club in Canberra — his leader Adam Bandt distanced his party from the “offensive” sign. But Bandt didn’t answer directly when asked whether the CFMEU would be welcomed into the fold if its split with Labor proves permanent.
