Greens target renters as it looks to encroach on Labor heartland

Blue-ribbon Liberal seats were besieged by a teal wave at the last election. This time around, the Greens are looking to encroach on Labor's heartland.

The Greens’ promise to become the “party of renters” will target Labor heartland at the next election, after the minor party seized a handful of marginal seats in 2022.

Labor faces an uphill battle to hold onto its three-seat majority at the next federal poll, battling sliding poll numbers and the expectation of losses in Western Australia.

In an interview with Capital Brief in February, Greens leader Adam Bandt named Wills in Melbourne’s inner-north on a three-seat hit list, declaring cost of living pressures just as central to the party’s platform as the environment.

In the strongest sign the Greens view a seat once held by Bob Hawke as vulnerable, Victorian state leader Samantha Ratnam will attempt to wrest Wills off Labor MP Peter Khalil at the next election.
