Helen Haines was one of the architects of the National Anti Corruption Commission, but now has concerns about its "shaky start" and overall record.

Independent MP Helen Haines, one of the architects of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), has called on Commissioner Paul Brereton to "fully retire" from the defence forces over concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Dr Haines, who was deputy chair of the parliamentary oversight committee for the NACC, told Capital Brief that confidence in the commission "would be enhanced" if Mr Brereton made the move.

Brereton has rejected suggestions he should resign his commission as a major general in the Army Reserve, amid revelations he had already recused himself from six investigations involving the Australian Defence Force.

"In such an important public role, managing perceived or actual conflicts of interest is critical,'' Haines said.
