Holding Redlich’s Troy Lewis on industry shifts and the fight to retain mid-career lawyers
National managing partner Troy Lewis speaks to Capital Brief about evolving client expectations, talent retention and why location is no issue when it comes to leadership.
Holding Redlich national managing partner Troy Lewis has observed a change in the client-adviser relationship in the last five years and it’s one he expects will only gather pace.
“More and more, we see clients don’t just want answers to their legal problems, but they want to be able to have conversations about the industry as a whole, where it's going, and opportunities for them moving forward,” he told Capital Brief in a recent interview.
Clients want to work more closely with anyone retained in an advisory role, Lewis said, to ensure those advisors not only fully understand a client’s business, but can add value.
“I think that trend will continue to accelerate,” he said.
It’s a market shift that comes as law firms struggle to retain mid-career lawyers. At Holding Redlich, Lewis is focussed on a number of factors when it comes to talent retention: flexible working, longer-term strategies, a gender pay gap of 2.1%, “which far exceeds that of nearly all of our competitors”, and early career-growth opportunities.
